Information on 2009 H1N1 pandemic flu virus or “Do I need a seasonal flu vaccinationif I got the H1N1 vaccine or had the flu in 2009-early 2010?” YES, read on!

***This year’s seasonal flu vaccine will contain the 2009 H1N1 pandemic virus (swine flu), so there will be no need for a separate vaccination.

***Many people have been wondering if they received the H1N1 vaccination in 2009 or early 2010 (or actually had influenza) whether or not they still need to be vaccinated.  The answer is YES a vaccination is still recommended. First, immunity to flu vaccination persists for only up to a year depending on the recipient’s immune response. Secondly, there are two other strains of influenza virus in the vaccine and it’s really not known what type of flu will be prevalent in the coming flu season.

***It is safe to receive this year’s seasonal flu vaccine, which remember contains the 2009 H1N1 virus strain, even if a person already had that flu or got vaccinated for it already.

***There is some evidence in other parts of the world that another type of flu strain (which is in this season’s vaccine) may circulate. Vaccination is still the best way to prevent getting influenza!
